Tell Me About Your Roots...............

Good morning all,
I was thinking last night about my recipe post and the pics of a hometown cowboy, Hopalong Cassidy. It gave me an idea. We may post pics of our homes , crafts and families, but I am interested in knowing things about your town. So, I thought I would start . Let me tell you a little about my hometown, Cambridge, Ohio

Cambridge is the county seat of Guernsey County, Ohio. Residents named the town after Cambridge, Maryland. In 1806, residents established the town, which was located along Zane's Trace. Eventually, the National Road also passed through the community, making Cambridge a center of trade.
Cambridge grew relatively quickly. Nearly one thousand people resided in the community by 1840. The town consisted of four churches, nine stores, one flour and two fulling mills, and one newspaper office. By the American Civil War, two railroads intersected in the town, causing further growth. By 1880, 2,833 residents lived in Cambridge, and the town now included five newspaper offices, seven churches, and three banks. Numerous manufacturing businesses operated in the town. In 1886, the largest employer was the Cambridge Chair Factory, with seventy-five employees. Other businesses manufactured doors, iron roofs, and buggies, among other items. During the late 1880s and the early 1890s, residents discovered deposits of natural gas and oil. These two items led to the creation of a glass-making industry. While the city's glass production declined during the twentieth century, a tourist industry, consisting largely of glass collectors, arose in its place.
During the twentieth century, Cambridge continued to grow in population. In 2000, the community had 11,520 people. This amounted to over twenty-five percent of Guernsey County's total population. Many residents currently find employment in travel-related businesses, with both Interstate 70 and Interstate 77 passing through Cambridge.

John Herschel Glenn Jr. (born July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio) is a former United States Senator who first rose to fame as the first American to orbit the Earth as an astronaut in NASA's Mercury program. Glenn began his career as a Marine Corps fighter pilot before joining the Mercury Seven, NASA's original astronaut group. He orbited the Earth aboard Friendship 7 in 1962. After retiring from NASA, he served in the Senate from 1974 to 1999, serving as a Democrat and representing the state of Ohio.
He was honored with a Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978 and was inducted into the Astronauts Hall of Fame in 1990. He became the oldest person to fly in space and the only person to fly on the first and most recent US space programs (Mercury and Shuttle programs) when, at the age of 77 in 1998, he flew aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-95). Glenn and M. Scott Carpenter are the last surviving members of the Mercury Seven as of September 2008.

In the early 1900s, Guernsey County, and particularly Cambridge, became known worldwide for its production of quality glass, mainly from The Cambridge Glass Company. Today, Cambridge glass is a much sought-after collectible. The company produced thousands of designs and color combinations, considered one of the finest quality glassware lines in the world.

Take a trip back in time and experience old world England as historic downtown Cambridge, Ohio, is charmingly transformed into a Dickens Victorian Village each holiday season. The Dickens Victorian Village is the most unique holiday tour destination in the Midwest!

Thursday's Show & Tell

Good afternoon everyone!
I wanted to post a few pics of some things that I am oh, so smiling about. :)
First, I want to say a big thank you to Tara for the awesome melts I got in the mail. Not only do they have rockin' great scents, but she also made me personalized tags that say, "Simple Needs".

Stop over and check out all her great goodies, cause she is having a sale right now.

I got cinnamon buns, and chunky stars scented in harvest moon, caramel apple, pumpkin pie, carrot cake, apple brown betty and more!!)

See my personalized tags?! They are going to be great for sales!

I bought these trees at a local thrift store. I got all five for $1.00!!
The smaller ones Iam going to use when I make some santas. I will get some pics when I get them made( good grief, Christmas is getting closer!)

See these two adorable kitties? the one inside the crock is "Tater Tot" and the other is "Ashes". They are brother and sister. Someone dropped them off a few months ago. I guess we are keeping them. They are so fun to watch.

Weekend Ventures.........

Angie from http://sugarplumpatch.blogspot.com/ has tagged me and gave me an award!!

Thanks so much Angie!!

I posted the award a couple days ago , so I am just gonna post the six random things about me.

1. I love peanut butter on pancakes !!! well, I don't actually put the peanut butter on the pancakes but on the side of the plate. Before you cut a bite of pancake, get a little peanut butter on your fork,THEN head for the pancake and lots of syrup. :)

2. I have 2 sisters and a brother. All of our initials are the same- (K.R.D.)after our dad, Kenneth Ray. Our names are Kimberly Renae, Karla Rae, Kevin Ray and Kelly Rochelle

3. When I was little, my dream was to be a cowgirl. Thank goodness I changed my mind, otherwise my horse would surely be swaybacked from my big butt! :)

4. I have Duane Syndrome. You can read about it here.
http://www.genome.gov/11508984

5. I am so envious of those girls that make the altered art jewelry. I would love a very cool bracelet like some I have seen.

6. My dream is to have a small little cottage done in primitives. but I want it to be prims in the shades of cream, taupe and caramel. :)

Yesterday we had our last yard sale of the year. I was surprised at how well we did!! We had listed it as a "no early birds" sale. Okay , so tell me why we had folks here at 8am , when the ad clearly stated 9am-1pm??
So, a neighbor was trying to hold them back while we finished getting all the goodies ready. The excuse was they hadn't seen the ad in the paper to know it was no early birds. Um, hello,, then how the heck did they know about the sale??!! Sounded fishy to me..lol
Anyways, this morning my dad called me to let me know I jinxed him. My coffee pot had quit working on wednesday and I hadn't bought a new one( I was hoping to find a decent one while thrifting), so I borrowed his spare. This morning his quit working. so, I made a trip to Walmart, picked me up one, so I can give his back.

(photo from walmart site)

On to other things,

We went and picked apples this afternoon at my aunt's house. After last weeks storm there were alot that needed gathered. We are going to get out the old cider press this week and make some cider. Last year we mixed apples and pears and it was awesome!! No, we don't pasteurize it...
and no one has ever gotten ill.

I am planning on making some pies this week with the ones I brought home. You can drop by for pie and coffee any morning. ;)

While I was at Walmart today , I picked up a loaf of their gourmet pumpkin bread. I liked it with a glass of milk, but tomorrow morning we are going to use it to make pumpkin french toast!! Yum!!! I think it will be awesome!

Tonight , I made stuffed peppers and sourdough bread for supper. I have been in such a mood to cook lately.:)
Have you noticed anything about my blog?
Well, I took the music off. I did it for two reasons. one , I had some folks say it was harder to load with the music if you have dial up.
Two, it was driving me crazy when I would click to read other blogs and I would hear their music and my own. so, I was thinking , if it was bothering me, then it was probably bothering others. I will probably leave it off for a while.
I think I got all my swaps sent out this week. I am hoping so anyways. We were without power a few times after the storm. Things were a little hectic. I am thinking I may have forgot to put a money order in one for shipping. but, if I did , I know she will give me a holler and it will be in the mail. The reason why I am thinking i forgot to send the shipping fee is cause I had gotten a card to put it in and I still have the card above the viser. but, I can't find the money order, so who knows..... ever have one of those ditzy spells??

Oh, I picked up a few things from the thrift store Saturday evening......... got to get some pics of them too.
Have a great evening. Kim

Thursday night..........

Thursday night..........
I just got home a while ago . I have thought about posting all day and didn't.
I put out my flag this morning before I left.
I have thought much about those whose lost their lives on 9/11. I wonder what they would be doing now if things would have been different? I wonder what they would say to us if they would have made it out?
-do you ever wonder what the people thought of when they jumped from the tower?
were they scared? did they ask God to save them? did they decide that those last minutes of life was their last attempts of what control they had??

- or how brave the terrorists must of thought of those who attempted to over take them on the plane. did they think that maybe these Americans were braver than anyone thought? did they think maybe we shouldnt have messed with such an awesome country?? I hope they realized how true in spirit we really are. I wish they , the terrorists , could have had the chance to say, "hey , lets not mess with these Americans!" Maybe we wouldnt have had to go to war, maybe things overseas wouldnt be how they are. Our soldiers could be home. the terrorists. being the cowards that they are, could be cowering in their own cowardly country.

I think of all the emergency personnel that rushed to New York, PA, and Washington DC. I hope they know how awesome I think they are, how awesome we should ALL think they are!!
They had no clue if they were placing thier lives in harm's way but they did it anyway. why?? Because thats what we do in this country. We look out for one another.
I ask you all to think of those like Mary,http://gettysburghomestead.blogspot.com/ ,who is off to the south to help with the storm devastation. Her and many others have left their families to help other families.
Tonight , and every night as you sit down at home with your family, please take a moment and think how lucky you are. Think of those who are not with their families, whether for a few days, weeks, months. or like those victims of 9/11,who are gone forever from their families.

Ten Things I Love about Fall................

I was visitng Rondelle's blog http://rondell-tomatoecreekprims.blogspot.com/and seen the post on her ten favorite Fall things and thought I would share mine too. :).

1. The beautiful assortment of colored leaves. I thank God for the wonderful gifts such as this.

2. Chilly nights and the bluest skies. I love the idea of fresh air coming in the wondows instead of the a/c. The color of skies in the autumn are a deeper blue.

3. The smell of wood smoke . The idea that families are home sitting by a fire and all is good in life.

4. Afternoon light. When the sun rides close to the horizon and the light slants in from the side, the trees blaze. I love that light, even though it means it'll be night soon.

5. Sweats and hoodies and socks. Fall clothes are comfy -- at least mine are -- and yet it's not cold enough for a coat.

6. The rustling of leaves as they scatter on the ground with the blowing wind.

7. Fall food- crisp, tart apples, pumpkin pie, fresh( real) apple cider, and homemade donuts

8. Hearing the crowd cheer and the band play at high school football games. It brings back such great memories of growing up.

9. Driving by pumpkin patches literally exploding with big orange pumpkins

10. Watching little ones playing in big piles of leaves. I remember my girls jumping in the leaves over and over again. I miss those times so much.

W.W.W.- I have been busy..............

Good Morning!!
I have been up for a couple hours. Laundry is almost done, sweeper has been run, cats fed and I am posting my new projects.
This is a witch( 0f course,duh). :)
I am not sure the original pattern maker. I borrowed it from a friend and there is no name on it. So, if its yours; please accept my apologies for not giving you credit. :)
The pattern was really easy to do and I have had a couple requests from friends and neighbors to make them one. I want to make a really extreme witch for my own door, or maybe a punkin man. hhttp://www.moonchildsprimitives.com/ has some really cool dolls that I would love to make!

Witch stocking from a Tennessee Ridge Primitives freebie.

I havent decided what to do put in the stocking as a filler.
bittersweet? twigs? or old bobbins??

What are you working on today??
Kim

p.s. please pass this on.............

In the days, weeks and months following 9/11, our country was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned the incredible losses and stood shoulder-to- shoulder against terrorism. Sadly, those flags have all but disappeared. Our patriotism pulled us through some tough times and it shouldn't take another attack to galvanize us in solidarity. Our American flag is the fabric of our country and together we can prevail over Terrorism of all kinds. On Thursday, September 11th, 2008, an American flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States. Every individual should make it their duty to display an American flag on this seventh anniversary of one our country's worst tragedies. We do this in honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms. Please forward this message to everyone in your email address book & post it on your blogs! God Bless America!

Weekend Finds .............

Yea!! I got the yard sale goodies to post !! lol
I didnt find a whole bunch this past weekend. Partly because of alot of folks are involved in the fair and the weather didn't cooperate much.
I found-
1.a bag of polyfill $1.00
2. whole set of stackable glass bowls $2.00. there is nine of them. the smallest one is only big enought to hold a tea bag. I have never seen a set of bowls like that.
3. a large and HEAVY cutting block. $1.00 . It has legs on it so I think I will make a table bench out of it. :)
4. monster soap dispenser 25 cents. it is going to my mom. she changes out her soap dispensers to match the seasons. lol
5. very old garland 25 cents for both boxes. the bottom of the box says 1969. I thought I might use it for altered art projects.

My favorite find! I got this scarecrow for $3.00. he is five foot tall. I know he looks short in the pic but I am sitting on the hood of my Explorer. I need to change some of the raffia on him and probably add a new bandana around his neck. Otherwise, I love him!! He made me smile. See, the cat in the right hand corner?? She thinks she is hiding..... lol

Bittersweet anyone?? I found this growing up the side of an old building in town. I hopped out with the trusty snips and got a few sprigs. Its going to be used in one of my crocks. best of all it was free.

Wait till you see what I am posting for Wednesday..
Enjoy life,
Kim

Fat Friday & Guernsey County Fair.......

Hi all!!
I have so much to catch up on, you all have been so busy!:)
I have been busy around the house and boxing things up for ebay.
First, here is my recipe for fat friday.

CHOCOLATE SIN

Could there be anything more fitting for a Friday Night? It's lots of layers composed of coffee-soaked German chocolate cake, chocolate pudding, Cool Whip, and crushed Skor bars. Repeat all layers to your heart's content. Top with chocolate chips and enjoy! Make it as big as you want.
Can you feel the pounds creeping on?

Next week starts our county fair. I love the fair!! I wish ours was like Leslie's; where you could go and stay. I think that is so cool!
French Fries are one of my favorite fair eats. I love them with malt vinegar! yum!!!!
I checked the paper today for yard sales, not alot to choose from. There is about 25 in the area .. Well, within a 15 mile area. Hopefully, I can find some goodies to post about.
Be back soon, Kim
